Character InfoCharacter: Wirt
Series: Over the Garden Wall
Canon Point: Episode 8, Babes in the Wood - after he wakes up from nearly being claimed by the Beast, panics about his brother, and falls into an icy river. He'll wake up in the back seat of the car taking him to Riverdale.
Appearance: Wirt's very average all around - not particularly tall, not particularly thin, just your average New England boy. Brown hair and eyes, and his hair is often a little messy, though not from lack of trying. His personal sense of style is very old-fashioned and actually trends toward the styles of the setting and maybe even a little earlier than that - things like button down shirts, sweaters, slacks, and even suspenders.
History: WIKILINK.
CRAU: N/A
Age: 15. Canon doesn't give him an age beyond "teenager" but I usually ping him as just old enough for a learner's permit but not old enough to actually be applying to colleges.
Personality: Please give us a basic rundown of your character's personality! No longer than 500 words, please! Bullet points are fine.
- He is so anxious: If anxiety had a dictionary definition, his picture would be right next to it. He canonically stammers and stutters enough that it's written into the subtitles, and in any given situation he overthinks the different paths he could take, and without intervention this sometimes results in not taking a path at all. He's also shown to have severe social anxiety in particular, worrying about how his actions will impact how other people see him and whether or not people he knows secretly hate him or talk behind his back.
- He's smart, with a wide variety of weird interests. He's a little bit of a bookworm and seems to have a fascination with history in particular. Sometimes he just has weird little pieces of knowledge at the tips of his fingers, like whether or not a building is Edwardian or more French Rococo-style. His bedroom wall has a copy of the Hereford Mappa Mundi (a very old map from the 1300s) on it. His interests are something that he thinks other people will think are strange, but they're also generally outside the scope of what he learned about in school, so they're all things he's sought out on his own.
- He's creative - both in writing and musically. He made a mixtape for his crush back home, Sara, and instead of taping songs off the radio like all the other kids, it's entirely his own poetry and clarinet compositions. He's really embarrassed about it and pretty sure his life is over now, and has been kicking himself for letting it fall into her hands ever since. He definitely considers himself a poet, and when he's zoning out sometimes this because flowery internal narration. He's the type of person who, if alone, could recite poetry off the top of his head.
- He's petty, stubborn, and holds grudges. Wirt has a really hard time letting things go. Beatrice told him he was too much of a pushover exactly once and then he spent the entire episode derailing their adventure by doing literally exactly what he was told to do out of spite. He's also learning to navigate this in the context of Greg, his little brother and a literal product of his parents' divorce. He initially blamed Greg for their entire adventure in the Unknown, but he's finally realized that maybe he was a little too harsh on a six-year-old child who just wanted to catch a frog.
- When push comes to shove, he can be brave. Sometimes it takes a big push to force him into motion, like realizing a loved one is in trouble, but he's more capable than he thinks he is. He isn't a fighter really, but he gets out of situations with cleverness and panicked quick thinking usually.
Powers & Abilities: So this isn't exactly a power
or an ability, but this feels more appropriate to put here than in personality--
- So about the Unknown-- Wirt is coming from a place called The Unknown, which isn't actually the world he's from! In the world he's actually from, he's drowning in a lake on Halloween. The Unknown is somewhere between Purgatory and a Dreamscape - it's pretty clearly a space between life and death filled with lost and forgotten souls, but also a place that seems to be mildly influenced by Wirt and Greg's interests (as well as a place that they're shown to be able to access in their dreams in the comics). The show creator has also described it as a place where things go once they're forgotten about (example - the opening shows children playing with a steamboat toy only for that steamboat to be in the Unknown as a real steamboat full of frogs).
- Meaning, Wirt's a little spacey, especially at first. Because Wirt wasn't conscious in the Unknown, sometimes things hit him either as a delayed reaction or not at all. He has a tendency to either zone out more or take things at face value that he wouldn't necessarily think are normal in other circumstances. He also doesn't fully remember yet how they got from their world to the Unknown, just like characters don't know how they got from their homes to the back of the car on arrival. He isn't really aware yet of the fact that he's drowning, except that within the Unknown he fell in a different body of water (he's double-drowning!). His stories about the place he's from will be a really odd mix, difficult for others to put together. Sometimes he's talking about normal high school life, and others he's talking about how he and his brother just got lost in the woods on the way home and met pumpkin-headed skeletons and talking bluebirds. By all accounts, it doesn't make any sense. It barely even makes sense to him, but thinking about it would mean thinking about everything, so...he'd rather not. Everything is a lot. This shouldn't have physical effects per the setting giving people new bodies if they've been separated from theirs, his brain is just a little fuzzy when he tries to put everything together.
Plans: So there's a number of other kids and teenagers in this game (or at least on the TDM), and I think it would be fun to play him in a place where he has more peers! I'm interested in exploring him trying to navigate this town as a parentless teenager as well, and I think the other kids/teens will be the ones who keep him from winding up adopted/at The Sisters of Quiet Mercy. He'll probably feel like he has to try and get a job and generally be a responsible young man in front of all these adult characters. He'll be very focused on trying to figure out where his brother Greg is at first too, but it'll become really apparent over time that he isn't here. From there his focus will shift from finding Greg to getting
back to Greg, but...where was he going back to again? Is Greg somewhere that he can actually go back to? He'll spend quite a bit of time trying to research the town too. Might as well if he's not getting enrolled in school, right? Eventually I'd love for him to learn what happened to him, and that there's a strong possibility he might be dead or dying at home.
Suitcase Items: 1. A pointy red cone hat. It's definitely a little dented from being in the suitcase.
2. A
1970s-style cassette player/recorder. It once belonged to his dad.
3. A pair of
magic sewing scissors. They're fully depowered, but also the only specific use they have in canon is to snip away the wings of someone cursed to be a bird to make them human again so...he'll probably only re-power them later if he starts feeling guilty about the fact that he kind of stole the scissors from someone he was mad at and now they don't even work. ...Which is entirely possible.
